How to Set Up Skis for New Boots

Ski boots have a hard outer shell that offers plenty of support and a soft liner that provides cushioning and warmth. After browsing and finally choosing a new pair of ski boots, it's time to set up your skis for the snow season. Perform your own setup if you're familiar with the basics of ski maintenance, or take your gear to a ski shop for a professional tune-up. Taking them for a tune-up make sense if you haven't skied in a long time because your skis may need extensive adjustments.

Adjust and tighten your bindings. Use a screw to adjust both the toes and heels of the bindings, depending on your DIN setting. This setting is typically adjusted by a ski technician based on your height, weight, age and skiing ability, and the sole length of the boots. Access the large screws in the front and back of the toe and heel, and turn the dial to your setting. Tighten the screws.

Install the new boots and test the release settings of your bindings. You should be able to open the front bindings by twisting or wiggling your foot left and right. Remove the boots and tighten the bindings to ensure they can stand higher pressure.

Moisten a clean rag with alcohol and wipe your skis. Remove any dirt, dust or debris and allow them to dry for about 20 minutes.

Wax your skis. Use a ski-waxing iron and wax in a ventilated area. Apply a wax layer over the entire base and make sure that it melts all the way across your ski from edge to edge and top to bottom. Allow them to cool and dry completely for an hour. Your skis are now completely set up for your new boots and the snow season.
