How to Adjust G3 Telemark Bindings

G3, which stands for Genuine Guide Gear, makes one of the most popular cable bindings for telemark skiing. The binding has several incarnations. The Targa is the standard men's binding, and the Targe elle is the women's version. The T9 and T9 elle are a lightweight version designed for backcountry touring. The Ascent and Ascent elle incorporate a free pivot for easier uphill travel that is activated via a switch at the front of the binding that can be thrown with a ski pole. Whatever G3 binding you have, adjusting it to fit your boots is similar, as the cable design is the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the anti-ice plate from the toe plate of the binding and remove both the anti-ice plate and the toe plate.

    • 2

Check the routing of the cable under the toe plate through the cable guide on the shim. G3 has three wrap patterns for this part of the cable, based on boot size. For men's 4.5 to 7.5, the cable should wrap around the guide with the cable crossing to form an X; for men's 7 to 10.5, the cable should be looped in a straight line in around the post; for boots bigger than 10, do not wrap it around the guide (see Resources).

    • 3

Screw the toe plate and anti-ice plate back into place; put your boot's front into the binding and the heel throw in position against the back of the boot.

    • 4

Rotate the cartridges to loosen or tighten the fine tuning as needed, turning the cartridges counterclockwise to loosen and clockwise to tighten.

    • 5

Snap the heel throw in place. Push down on the cartridges; they should move no more than 1 to 2 mm.
