How to Do Snowboarding Grabs

Experience the thrill of performing snowboard aerial tricks such as the grab. A snowboard grab occurs when the rider holds or grabs either edge of the snowboard using one or both hands. There are many different types of grabs and learning them can be very enjoyable, especially if you are an experienced snowboarder. Grabs, often used in combination with tricks like spins and the "Alley Oop," also help you to balance your body as you initiate turns and prepare to land.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with sufficient speed on the half pipe and make sure you have enough propulsion for getting airborne to make a grab.

    • 2

Keep the snowboard flat as you reach the lip or edge of the halfpipe. As you launch upward, bend both knees while keeping your body centered over the board. Do not bend your back to reach your board; instead, bring the board closer to you by pulling it with your knees.

Grab your snowboard while you're up in the air. To perform an Indy grab, use your rear hand to grab the snowboard between your bindings on the toe-edge. To perform a stalefish, grab the snowboard between the bindings at the heel-edge using your rear hand. You can also try the melon grab. To perform a melon, use your front hand to grab the snowboard between your bindings at the heel-edge.

Release the grab and prepare for landing. Take your hand off the board as you approach the halfpipe's lip and make sure that you reach it with your snowboard flat to absorb the impact as you land.

    • 5

Perform a smooth, stable landing and then ride away.
