How to Decide Snowboard Footing

In skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing alike, footing is important for keeping your balance on the board. Riders stand either "regular" or "goofy" footed when on their snowboard. "Regular" is when you stand with your left foot forward while "goofy" is standing with your right foot forward. Before you begin riding, you must learn how to stand on your board in the most comfortable fashion.

Instructions

Stand with your back to a friend with your balance distributed evenly across both your feet. Have your friend give you a push from behind. You will naturally place one foot forward to catch yourself. Whichever foot you move first will be the foot that is best for you to place forward when riding on a snowboard.

Ride down a hill on a bike and stop pedaling. Stand up on the pedals and pay attention to the foot that you place forward while the bike is in motion. The forward foot is the same foot that you will want forward when standing on the snowboard.

Strap yourself into your snowboard with one foot forward. Rock yourself back and forth to see how comfortable you are with that foot forward. Switch your stance to test out your balance on the other side.
