List of Soccer Clubs in Canada

Canada may not be the most developed soccer nation in North America, but it still has a number of professional, semi-pro and amateur soccer clubs. These include professional clubs that are actually part of the United States' pro league, Major League Soccer, and of its own semi-pro and amateur leagues. The nation sends at least one professional club each year to the CONCACAF Champions League, which determines the North American champion.
  1. MLS Clubs

    • Toronto FC became the first Canadian soccer club to join Major League Soccer, as it was added to the league in 2007. The Vancouver Whitecaps FC are scheduled to begin play in the league in 2011, with the Montreal Impact following suit in 2012. Prior to joining MLS, Vancouver and Montreal played the 2010 season in the United States Soccer Federation Division 2, and Vancouver played in the United Soccer League First Division. MLS clubs from Canada have two chances to enter the CONCACAF Champions League, by winning either the MLS Cup or the Canadian Championship.

    Canadian Soccer League Clubs

    • The Canadian Soccer League, Canada's own domestic league, has been in existence since 1926, although it has only been called with its current name since 2006. The league contains 13 clubs, which include clubs with affiliations to teams in overseas countries. The majority of the clubs are located in Ontario, which include clubs in Toronto (Portugal FC, Serbian White Eagles, Hamilton Croatia and TFC Academy), Mississauga, Brampton, Brantford, Italia, London City, North York and St. Catharines. The remaining clubs are in Quebec: Montreal and Trois-Rivières. As of 2010, the CSL does not take part in the Canadian Championship.

    USL Premier Development League Clubs

    • Canada has seven clubs in the Premier Development League of the United Soccer Leagues. This is an amateur branch of the USL that is primarily focused on developing players to enter the pros. Canada's clubs in the PDL include clubs in Abbotsford, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Thunder Bay, Victoria and Forest City.

Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League Clubs

    • Canada's indoor league is one of the country's youngest, founded in 2007. The league has five clubs as of 2010: Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Prince George. The league is actively seeking expansion, possibly adding clubs in Vancouver, Ottawa, Windsor and Victoria.
