London Soccer Clubs

As capital of the United Kingdom, it’s fitting that London has a number of successful soccer clubs, many of which are named after the district of London in which they are based. The majority of these teams compete each season, from August to May, in the English Premier League (EPL), although some play in the lower soccer leagues, which include the Football League Championship.
  1. Chelsea F.C.

    • Chelsea F.C. was formed in 1905, and the team plays at the Stamford Bridge Stadium; the team trains, however, at Cobham in Surrey. Chelsea F.C. has been a powerhouse in English soccer throughout the late 20th century and into the 21st, winning professional soccer titles on several occasions, including the Football Association cup four times between 2007 and 2010 alone and the Premier League three times in the 2000s.

    Arsenal F.C.

    • One of London’s most successful soccer clubs, Arsenal F.C. has an impressive roster of achievements, including its string of wins in Premier League competition--49 games in a row, including the entirety of the 2003-2004 soccer season--a record which has not since been equalled. The club maintains a fierce rivalry with Tottenham Hotspur F.C., with matches between these two teams being particularly hotly contested.

The club was formed by a group of Scottish men based in Woolwich, London, who worked at the Arsenal munitions factory in 1886; since then, the club has incorporated these beginnings into its logo, which depicts a cannon to reflect the military-related origins of the side. Today, Arsenal F.C. plays their home matches at the Emirates Stadium.
