How to Pick Gloves for Fastpitch Softball

1
Figure out what position you will be playing. First baseman, catchers, infielders, and outfielders, all have glove designs that fit their position.

2
Decide what size glove you need. Generally, outfielders prefer a glove that is longer than 13 inches. This allows them to more room for error in while judging a fly ball. Infielders, including pitchers, prefer a glove shorter than 14 inches. This allows them to "feel" the ball in their glove and get rid of it quickly. Catchers and first basemen have gloves specifically designed for them and it will depend on the preference of the player to decide on the size.

Think about the environment you are going to be playing in and that will determine if you need an open or closed back glove. Open back gloves allow for the hand to be cooler and usually offer an adjustment strap. A closed back glove can be very warm on the hand and cannot be adjusted.

Ask other softball players what kind of web design they have in their glove and if they like it or not. The web design of a glove is a personal preference as well but there is one major question you should ask yourself. Can you see the ball through the webbing? You should be able to. If you cannot, you do not need to purchase that glove.

5
Determine how much you are willing to pay. Like most things, you pay for what you get. You can purchase a very low quality glove for $60, but you will probably be replacing it each year. On the other hand, a $150 to $200 glove will last you for many seasons.
