How to Make Doe Decoys

Doe decoys are used to attract the attention of bucks in the wild, drawing them close enough in for the hunter to get a shot off. Making your own doe decoy is relatively easy and while they can be made out of cardboard which is light to carry around, cardboard is not durable and plywood is a much better option.

  • Saw

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the outline of the doe onto the plywood. It should be drawn broadside on with its head facing forwards and its ears pricked up as if it is listening to some noise. This alert posture is more likely to attract the attention of a passing buck.

Use the saw to cut around the outline that you have drawn.

    • 3

Paint the body of the doe decoy with the light brown paint and allow it to dry. Paint the belly, throat and ears white and use the black paint for the eyes and the tip of the nose. All paint will need to be exterior paint. Allow the black and white paint to dry.

Nail the white sock to the tail end of the plywood cutout. Tie the fishing line to the sock and cut a length of the line that is long enough to reach the shooting spot. The sock is an essential part of the doe decoy, as you will pull the fishing line to wiggle the tail, which will help attract deer.

Add estrous doe urine scent to the doe decoy as it will help to attract bucks.
