How to Make Your Swim Goggles Hold a Seal

Swimming goggles are made for the rigors of lap swimming or triathlons. Unlike their scuba or snorkel mask cousins, swimming goggles do not have the nose enclosed in the mask itself. Due to the nose not being in the mask, making a tight and waterproof seal is done a little differently. Take the time to get a proper seal on your goggles to ensure clear sight and water-free eyes during swims.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip the goggles into the water prior to swimming. Inspect them for any dry rot or cracks around the face and eye edges. Spit into the inside of the lenses and wipe it over the lenses. Rinse them out. This gives a fog-proofing for your swim.

    • 2

Put the goggles onto the face and slip into the water. Pull them over the eyes. Go underwater for a few seconds, turning over to face the water surface.

    • 3

Press down on the tops of the eye lenses, pushing out any air bubbles along the edges of the goggles. Feel the pressure change on the eye portion indicating a watertight seal is made.

Pull the straps as tight as possible while still underwater with the pressure on the eye lens pieces. You now have a sealed pair of goggles.
