How to Use Pull Buoys

A pull buoy will help keep the lower half of a swimmer afloat as he pulls himself through the water using only upper-body strength. Pull buoys are valuable training equipment for competitive swimmers and, when used properly, can help improve one's swimming technique. They are used in most competitive swim programs to aid in the teaching of proper form. These swimming aids are often made out of closed cell foam, which helps prevent the absorption of water and keeps them afloat.

Instructions

Stand in the shallow end of the pool, or support yourself on the side of an all-deep pool by holding onto the edge with one hand, and place the pull buoy between your thighs. The slender, middle part will rest high between your legs if the pull buoy you are using is single-piece construction. If it is an adjustable, two-piece model, you will need to adjust the straps until it fits comfortably between your legs. You want it to be neither too tight nor too loose.

Cross your ankles. Doing so will help keep the pull buoy in place between your legs. While using the pull buoy, it is best to keep your ankles crossed at all times to keep the device secure.

    • 3

Place your feet on the pool's wall and push off with your legs. Extend your arms above your head and glide through the water. Keep your legs pressed tightly together and your toes pointed straight behind you to minimize your drag through the water.

Once your momentum wanes, begin commencing with your arm strokes and allow the pull buoy to support the weight of your lower body in the water. Follow a smooth, controlled motion for optimal results.
