How to Add Power to a Tennis Stroke

Several adjustments can be made to your tennis stroke so that you can generate more power, and this all starts with proper conditioning and many hours of practice. While the less common drop-shots in tennis don't require a lot of power, some of the best tennis strokes have a considerable amount of force. Expert tennis players are able to combine their power with pinpoint accuracy that sees the ball barely clear the net to land within the opposition boundaries.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice hitting the ball against a wall. Work on your forehand one day and then switch to the backhand. Train for approximately one hour each day to get the most out of each session. Many public tennis courts have a wall designated for training.

    • 2

Rotate your hips as you practice and follow through with your swinging arm. You will gain more force if you use your hips to propel your upper body into the shot.

    • 3

Meet the ball in the center of your racket. This area will create the most amount of force and generate more speed as the ball bounces off the strings.

    • 4

Breathe out as your make contact with the ball. This will relax your muscles slightly and allow them to focus their energy on stroking the ball.

    • 5

Step into the shot with the leg opposite to the side from which you are hitting. Your shot will be more powerful if taken from a solid base.
