Tennis Camp Activities

Drills
-
In addition to having fun, tennis camps are designed to help new players learn the game and help more experienced players hone their skills. Drills break down all the skills needed to play and help players concentrate on specific aspects of play, such as serving, backhands and ground strokes. For example, the Quince Orchard Junior Tennis Camp in Gaithersburg, Maryland, utilizes drills that work on players’ techniques and help develop shot consistency and placement.
Match Play
-
While drills work to develop specific aspects of the tennis game, simply playing remains the best way to learn and improve. Many tennis camps, such as the Adidas Tennis Camps, incorporate match play into each tennis camp day’s itinerary. According to the Adidas Tennis Camp website, campers take part in match play at least once a day, with another time slot open for optional match play.
Personal Evaluations
-
Many tennis camps include personal evaluations as part of the camp experience, giving campers something they can take with them long after camp is over. Personal evaluations highlight a camper’s strong points and show them where improvement is needed. The Nike Tennis Camps offer personal evaluations along with “post camp improvement roadmaps” that give campers goals for improving their game and specific areas to work on after camp.
Fitness and Exercise
-
Tennis requires speed, agility and athleticism and so several tennis camps incorporate fitness and exercise activities into the camp day along with tennis drills and match play. At the Northstar at Tahoe Tennis Camps, adult campers take part in “dynamic stretching” and cardio tennis, according to the Northstar at Tahoe website. Focusing on fitness and other aspects can help tennis players improve their all-around game.
Non-Tennis Activities
-
For overnight tennis camps, campers usually do not spend the whole time playing tennis, but rather participate in other sports and activities. The Julian Krinsky School of Tennis, held at schools in the Philadelphia area, gives campers opportunities to try other sports such as soccer and ultimate Frisbee and take part in dances, bowling, movie nights and talent shows. Adding other activities along with tennis gives campers a well-rounded camp experience.
