How to be a Middle Hitter in Volleyball

In order for a volleyball squad to be effective on the offensive end, it is important for there to be more than one weapon in the team arsenal. This is where having a middle hitter can come in handy. It is difficult to defend a hit from this position, so it is very beneficial to have a strong presence in the middle. Just remember, practice makes perfect!

  1. Making it Happen

    • 1

Make sure to position yourself at the spike line, which is 10 feet from the volleyball net, when the ball is being passed to the setter.

    • 2

Stagger your feet so that your right foot is forward (if you are a right-handed hitter, opposite if you are a left-handed hitter), and position your arms slightly behind you as if you were going through the motion of snow skiing with two poles.

    • 3

As soon as the setter makes contact with the ball, take a big step with your left foot, and at the same time, swing both of your arms forward in order to gain momentum and put a little power behind your pending spike.

    • 4

Do a very quick hop with your right foot landing first and then step with your left foot staggered shoulder-width apart. Your left foot should now be closest to the net. While completing the hop-step, bring your arms back once again in preparation of attacking the ball.

    • 5

Jump straight up with your shoulders squared in the direction that you would like to spike the ball, and swing both arms up above your head ready to hit.

    • 6

With your left hand, locate the ball and use it as a guide to squaring up your body. Bring your right arm back above your head with your palm facing upward and swing through following a downard motion for the ball to clear the net.
