Learn several different types of wrestling takedown moves and practice them often. Basic takedown moves include the double leg takedown (while your opponent is off-balance, you quickly grab both of his legs and pull upward while forcing his upper body down to the mat at an angle), the single leg takedown (grab your opponent's leg, pulling it close to your body; force the upper body down to the mat) and the bear hug takedown, where you wrap your arms around your opponent while face-to-face, forcing him backwards to the mat.

Execute the wrestling takedown move with precision and speed to surprise your opponent and to avoid a counter-move.

Position yourself close to your opponent before attempting a takedown move. If you're too far away from him, the element of surprise is lost.
