How to Make Cheers for Your Own Team

Whether competing in a cheerleading competition or trying to raise the level of excitement in your hometown bleachers, your team can benefit by having its own custom cheers. Everyone will notice the extra effort you put into writing cheers to go with your routines. Custom cheers should feature information about your school by referencing your mascot, school colors or the name of your hometown. Writing cheers is a relatively simple process. Get the members of your squad together to create rhyming words and phrases to use in your cheers.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin brainstorming. Write down words that specifically relate to your school such as school colors, your mascot, name of the town and school and other important information such as rival schools.

    • 2

Give the cheer a title. Consider what sport or game best fits the cheer. There are many different events, and it's a good idea to compose cheers for specific sports. For instance, if you're cheering at a basketball game, you don’t want to be yelling about scoring a touchdown. Name the cheer based on the sport such as “Score a Basket.”

    • 3

Write down the cheer on paper. Use short, concise words without too many syllables—you want the cheer to sound natural, and complex words can't be heard easily by the crowd. If you’re unsure about a word, try cheering it out loud to see how it sounds. Write long or short cheers, but stick to a central theme when writing a single cheer.

    • 4

Indicate on paper any areas where certain actions or hand gestures, such as clapping, are required. Match physical components with the words so you and your squad will perform the cheer properly.

    • 5

Bring the finished cheer to your next team practice and ask your squad to cheer it out loud. When you hear the cheer out loud, you might realize that certain parts need work. Don’t be afraid to ask for your team’s input for how to make the cheer better—cheerleading is a team activity.
