How to Make Your Cheerleader Uniform

Cheerleading is an enriching team sport for many girls and young women. Just like any other team sport, the uniform is an important element in how the team presents itself. The cost of uniforms can be prohibitive for some squads. But with a little hard work, each team member can have her own custom uniform for a fraction of the cost. Get everyone together so each teammate can make her own uniform as a team bonding exercise.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with a tennis skirt and tank top for each team member in the same color. Pin contrasting trim in key places on the skirt and tank top. Start with the top and bottom hems of the tennis skirt as well vertical strips up each side. Place vertical strips in the same position up the sides of the tank top. Try attaching the trim in a large X across the front of the tank top, making sure to leave room for the lettering. If your school has several different colors, you can attach different colored strips of trim right next to each other.

Try on the outfit before sewing anything into place. You want to be sure than everything is well aligned before permanently attaching the trim to the garments.

    • 3

Sew all of the trim to the garments. If you have a sewing machine, it will come in handy for this step. Otherwise, use the needle and thread to attach the trim. Be sure to use a thread of a similar color to that of the trim so that it doesn't stand out. You can try using fabric glue, but that often won't hold up to washing.

Cut letters out of the felt using the stencils. You can use the initials of your school or the name of your team's mascot, like "Spartans." Whatever you decide to write will dictate how much felt you will need.

    • 5

Pin the letters to your tank top in exactly the position you would like them to go. Once again, try on the top just to make sure that everything is in the proper position. Sew the letters on to the top. If you do not have a sewing machine, try working with iron-on felt.
