How to Sing Oklahoma University Fight Songs

The long and noble athletics tradition of Oklahoma University has inspired a range of official school songs. With a little musical inclination and commitment, you can easily learn to sing along with the crowd at a Sooners' game.

      Know how to sing the "OU Chant," which is also the school's alma mater: "O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A--our chant rolls on and on! Thousands strong join heart and song in alma mater's praise: of campus beautiful by day and night, of colors proudly gleaming red and white 'neath a western sky. OU's chant will never die. Live on University!"

      Sing "Oklahoma," the famous song from the musical of the same name by Rogers and Hammerstein, which is often sung at games. The first part of the main verse goes: "Oklahoma! Where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain! And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet when the wind comes right behind the rain. Oklahoma! Ev'ry night my honey lamb and I sit alone and talk and watch a hawk makin' lazy circles in the sky."

      Add on the rest of the main "Oklahoma" verse: "We know we belong to the land, and the land we belong to is grand! And when we say 'Yeeow! Ayipioeeay!' We're only sayin' 'You're doin' fine, Oklahoma!' Oklahoma, O.K! Oklahoma, O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A--Oklahoma! OK!"

      Manually re-type the lyrics of the fight songs you want to learn into a word processor. This is more effective than simply copying and pasting the lyrics, or printing them directly off the Web page, because your brain will process the information again while you copy the lyrics over. This facilitates more effective memory recall. Print copies of the lyrics when you're done.

      Search for audio clips of the songs you want to learn and play them back on your computer's media software. Follow along with the lyrics to get a sense of how the verses function in relation to the music. Get your timing down.
