How to Foster Team Spirit at a School

Team spirit can mean different things to different people. For students, team spirit is the support that is shown for their fellow students. This support can be for a sporting team, an academic team or the school as a whole. For the parents and community, supporting their own children and the rest of the student body can bring about a feeling of pride in the town and school district. There are several ways to help children and adults of all ages show a little more school spirit.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a pep rally during the school day. Bring the student body together and celebrate a recent sporting victory or cheer on one of the teams to win at an upcoming event. Invite parents, as well, to support their children. Play games at the event or ask a few of the students to perform a talent.

    • 2

Ask the students to dress in themes that are centered on the teams each day for one week. This will help the kids feel connected and will get them into the spirit around a big event or at the end of the school year. Themes could include baseball day, football day, soccer day or hockey day.

    • 3

Organize a dance. There are several big dances throughout the year, such as prom and homecoming. Hold a dance in honor of the school by asking everyone that attends to wear their school colors or ask the athletes to wear their uniforms.

    • 4

Hold a bake sale. Ask the parents and students to bake goods and donate other supplies. The proceeds of the sale can go toward new uniforms, sporting equipment or a replacement scoreboard.

    • 5

Ask one of the teachers or the principal to perform a stunt or dare if the students in a particular grade or class can perform an achievement. For instance, if the football team wins five games in a row, the coach or principal has to shave his head or wear goofy clothing for one week.

    • 6

Sing the school song at the beginning or end the school day, or ask one of the students to write a chant or fight song that deals with a particular team sport. The chant or song can be funny or sentimental.

    • 7

Organize students to create a mural in honor of one of the teams. The picture should commemorate that particular team and its accomplishments over the past year. The wall can be decorated at the end of the year and painted over the following year by the next class.
