How to Make a Jersey Crest

The crest of a sports club is an important part of team branding, as it creates a logo for the club. When a crest is to be worn on a jersey, the image must be both easy to make out in a small form as well as stylistically matched with the jersey.

Incorporate the team's mascot or team name into the logo. For example, the Pittsburgh Steelers use a logo which includes elements of the logo for U.S. Steel.

    • 2

Consider the town or city that your team represents when designing the logo. For example, the Tampa Bay Lightning logo features a lightning bolt within a circle to represent the team, but the background of the circle contains the state of Florida, as well.

    • 3

Use team colors when designing the crest. A crest designed without regard to team colors will look odd placed on a jersey consisting of those colors.

    • 4

Create a basic design for the crest. Crests are often worn quite small on a jersey, only a few inches tall, but are seen from a distance or on television.

    • 5

Factor in the logo's placement on the jersey. For example, colors should be considered carefully for a team with a a red jersey and white sleeves.

    • 6

Draw the logo in a vector art program. Vector art allows for an image to be shrunk down to a very small size or grown to a very large size without sacrificing quality. This ensures that your image can then be applied to a jersey in a variety of styles, from creating a simple silk screen crest to creating an intricately stitched sew-on crest.
