Instructions

    • 1

Begin by removing the spark plugs. Disconnect the carburetors.

    • 2

Unscrew the engine mounting screws that hold the engine in the dirtbike frame. Pull the engine from the frame. Set it some place level and clear of obstructions.

    • 3

Disassemble the "top end" of the engine by removing the bolts holding the louvered housing to the bottom end of the engine. Slowly pull the top end off of the piston. If you are only rebuilding the top end or replacing piston rings, you can do that now.

    • 4

Remove the gear cover that is located on the bottom end of the engine to access the motorcycle transmission. There should also be another cover located on the opposite side of the engine; that one is the gear cover that will allow access to the bottom workings of the piston itself. You can remove the piston to get it machined or replace it with another one.

    • 5

Use a gear puller to change the gears on the transmission itself. You can also change the oil pan or replace head gaskets at this point. After taking Steps 1 to 4, your dirtbike engine is completely disassembled.
