Put the bike in first gear and start moving. Keep the speed down to around 10 miles per hour. If you are on a two stroke machine, you will need to be much more careful. A two stroke bike has what is called a "powerband." This means that at a certain rpm the motor will kick out and extreme amount of power instantly.

Once you are moving at around 10 miles per hour lean back on your seat and crank the throttle back. Make sure that you are familiar with where and when the powerband kicks in. It happens in a blink of an eye and if you are not careful you could be laying on your back in a quick hurry.

Keep your feet on the foot pegs so that when you feel the front tire come off the ground you can tap your back brake with your right foot. You need to practice throttle control. Do not twist the throttle too quickly.

After trying this a number of times you will have a good idea of how much throttle to apply. Try the same thing in second gear. This way, the throttle will not be as touchy. Make sure that you are practicing on dirt. It makes for a softer landing if you do go backwards.

When you get moving and you feel like you have some control of the throttle start to concentrate on the position of your butt on the seat. You will be able to control the height of the front end coming off the ground with a slight move of your body. Keep your feet firmly planted on the pegs. After you do this a few hundred times, you will be able to shift gears and ride faster wheelies.
