How to Land in Two Feet on a Skateboard

When executing an aerial trick on a skateboard, such as an ollie or pop shove it, knowing how to land on both feet cleanly on the board deck can mean the difference between an impressive trick and a major face plant. When in the air, your board control and positioning, body stance and mental focus all must come together to complete the move correctly. Some simple techniques added to your trick and a little practice can help you get positioned to hit the deck firmly with both feet and smoothly roll away.

    • 1

Envision the steps of the trick --- including the landing --- in your head from beginning to end, until you have them memorized, before you try the trick.

    • 2

Track the movement of the board under your feet, visually, as you execute an aerial trick. Watch any spin or rotation of the board to time the moment to position your feet over the deck again. Keep your feet up to prevent the board from hitting your feet and blowing the trick.

    • 3

Use your feet to reposition the board, if necessary. This usually requires a light touch to keep or move the board into position for the landing. As you start to drop, level the skateboard deck under you with your feet so both trucks will land on the floor at the same time.

    • 4

Bend your knees as you approach the ground, then extend your legs to stomp the board down with both feet. Focus all of your attention on your balance at this point. Use your arms and body position to maintain your balance.

    • 5

Bend your knees again to absorb the impact of the skateboard landing. As you make contact with the ground, lean forward a little to balance yourself through your forward momentum.
