Grants for Skateparks

Skateparks benefit communities by providing a recreational and athletic outlet for youths who aren't attracted to traditional team sports. There are numerous funding opportunities for community skateparks that can help with designing, building and maintaining the parks over time. Some opportunities are targeted specifically to nonprofit organizations, while others are available based on demonstrated community need. The best foundations to look to for skatepark funding are ones that focus on youth recreation.
  1. The Gannett Foundation

    • Nonprofit organizations in communities with a local newspaper or TV station funded by The Gannett Foundation are eligible for one of their Community Action grants. Proposals must be submitted to the local Foundation contact by February 16th or August 17th, although some areas have earlier local deadlines. The Foundation reviews proposals four times a year. Applications and answers to frequently asked questions about eligibility are available from their website.

    Ronald McDonald House Charities

    • Ronald McDonald House Charities offers grants to nonprofit organizations that help children and young people around the world achieve their potential. The grant application must demonstrate that the proposed skatepark will directly improve the health and well-being of children under 21, produce measurable results and will be sustained without additional Ronald McDonald House funding. The skatepark must also have a long-term strategic plan, staff to execute it, and the ability to be replicated in other communities.

They offer grants of up to $25,000 to fund the design, development, construction and operation of skateparks, particularly in lower-income areas. The application deadline is March 1.

    Local Grants

    • Local grant opportunities for building and maintaining a skatepark may be available through municipal funds. Depending on your community, the municipal budget may be administered by the select board, city council or other elected body. Create a proposal for funding, and lobby to include the skatepark in the budget. Build community support with local leaders and businesses that would benefit from the addition of a skatepark. Request letters of support from other municipal bodies like the local Parks Department.
