How to Use the AMT Precor

The AMT is a cardio machine made by Precor. AMT stands for Adaptive Motion Trainer. The AMT is unique because it adapts to your movement, changing how it moves to how you move. The machine has two foot plates that you stand on similar to an elliptical or stairstepper. It also has to movable arms and two stationary handlebars so you can choose to use your arms or not. The foot plates will move with you so you can change your motion throughout a workout without hitting a button or getting off the machine to make adjustments, such as with some cardio machines where you can change the incline manually.

      Step onto the foot plates and push down to begin using the machine in a walking motion. Follow the prompts on the screen and enter your age and weight as asked. Enter your weight by typing in the number on the number keypad when prompted. Type in your age as well when asked. You must pedal at a rate of 56 strides per minute minimum to power the console, according to the 100i Commercial Adaptive Motion Trainer Product Owner's Manual.

      Press "Quickstart" to use the manual program. Run, increasing your walking pace or extend your legs farther back into a lunging motion to increase your heart rate. Hold onto the moving handlebars to work your upper body and increase your workout intensity.

      Grab the touch-sensitive handlebar grips and hold for five to 10 seconds to check your heart rate. Wear the chest strap instead if the handlebars cannot pick up your pulse rate because of your body chemistry or erratic heart beats. Wear the chest strap snugly around your lower chest with the back of the strap dampened with tap water. Do not use the chest strap and the handlebars simultaneously.

      Adjust your workout to stay in your target heart rate zone. The AMT display will show your zone based on your age. Use the up and down resistance keys on the bottom of the console to increase or decrease the resistance of the foot plates as needed to stay in your zone.

      Press the "Programs - Heart Rate" key if you wish to use the AMT's heart rate programs instead of the manual Quickstart mode. This will tell the AMT to automatically adjust your workout so that you stay in your zone. Press "OK" to select a specific program.
