Kickboxing Basics

Be Comfortable
-
Before you even think about beginning your kickboxing session, you need to make sure that you have the appropriate attire. Being comfortable is the only way to ensure your safety and a proper workout. Whether you wear extremely loose clothing or tight workout spandex attire, make sure that you have the ability to move freely with no constrictions. Also, wearing cross-trainers is recommended because they give you side-to-side movement ability and full foot and ankle support. You may also want to wear gloves or hand wraps since you will be punching the bag and you can easily irritate or burn your hands and knuckles.
Fitness Levels
-
Before choosing the level of kickboxing you want to do, make sure that you know your own personal fitness level. If you do not workout often, you want to start with a beginners kickboxing class. You can also start with a low-impact aerobics or martial arts class to prepare your body for awkward movements and intense muscle use. Work out at your own pace so that you don't damage any muscles or ligaments. If you need to go slow, then take your time and focus on the movements so that you don't get hurt.
Start Out Slow
-
You want to make sure overall that all over your movements are controlled and that you are not flailing during the movements. When you fool around or don't pay full attention to the workout, you will most likely get hurt. Overextension of your arms and legs is easy if you kick too high or tense up in your arms before you throw a punch at the back. That is how you end up with sprains and pulled muscles. If you are not in shape, you have a higher risk of damaging muscles or ligaments and that could sometimes result in surgery to correct the problem.
Never lock your knees when making a kick. Keep your abdominal muscles tight to absorb some shock form the kick, and wear the proper footwear for when you lean onto one leg for full body support.
