How to Look for a Great Walking Sneaker

Choosing a walking sneaker is more involved than purchasing a pair for casual use. When walking for fitness, you must make sure that your foot and legs are protected by choosing the proper walking sneaker for your feet. The most important aspect is comfort followed by the overall fit of the shoe. As you walk, your feet, legs and hips take the brunt of the pressure, so utilizing the proper sneakers can allow you to walk farther without fatiguing.

Choose a walking sneaker with a low heel that rounds or curves inward to prevent heel shock. A fast walker must wear a shoe that can absorb the pressure of the foot coming down over and over again. Choosing a shoe that has a flat or protruding heel may cause your foot to slap down on the ground causing discomfort.

Look for a walking sneaker that has a sole which bends easily in the front. Unlike running shoes, walking shoes are made to absorb the pressure from the back to the front, also known as heel-to-toe. Bend the sole of the sneaker to make sure that this action is possible. Stiff soles will not be comfortable for walking and may cause damage to your feet and legs.

Put the shoe on to determine if it fits properly. Walking sneakers must fit comfortably with about a 1/2 inch space from the end of your toes to the front of the shoe. The width must also be ample so as not bind your feet, and you must not feel any discomfort while wearing them. Walk around the store to make sure that the sneakers don't slip and that they are comfortable.

Try on walking sneakers at the end of the day, because your feet will be slightly swollen. Buying shoes that fit perfectly when your feet are not swollen may be a problem when they start to swell while walking. Take your time while shopping and make sure that the shoes feel right and are comfortable. Go shopping another day if you do not have the time to properly try them on at the store.

Walk around the house with the sneakers on for extended periods of time. Return the shoes if they are not comfortable. Walking around the house lets you make sure the shoes are good for you, and at the same time prevents them from getting scuffed or over-worn, so you can return them to the store if necessary. Keep the box and receipt for a hassle-free merchandise return.
