How to Find the Right Size for a Sleeping Bag Stuff Sack

If you have a sleeping bag that you use for camping, then you know how important it is to have the accompanying stuff sack. Otherwise there is no way you could possibly carry an un-stuffed sleeping bag to your camp site. If you have accidentally lost your stuff sack, or it has torn from use, you can purchase a replacement that fits your sleeping bag by taking a few measurements.

Instructions

Lay your sleeping bag out on the floor. It should be zipped on a flat surface.

Roll your sleeping bag as you would to place it in a stuff sack. Start at the closed end and roll the sack over itself. If you have a wide sleeping bag, you may wish to fold in the edges. Roll the sleeping bag tightly, making sure to press out any air as you roll toward the opening.

Measure the sleeping bag. After rolling tightly, hold down the sleeping bag with one hand and measure the height and width using your tape measure. This result will tell you what size stuff sack you need. For example, your sleeping back might have started out 7 feet long and 3 feet wide. After rolling, the new dimensions might be 2 feet long and 18 inches wide. Measuring after you have tightly rolled the bag will allow you to take into account the weight, or stuffing, of the bag. Some sleeping bags are lightly stuffed, while others have quite a bit of insulation.

Find a stuff sack that meets your measurements. If you are in between two sizes, go for the larger one, so stuffing the sleeping bag is easier.
