How to Get a Lighter Trigger Pull on CVA Muzzleloaders

Producing a full line of muzzle-loading firearms, CVA designs most of its guns with adjustable triggers which allow the shooter to adjust the tension. Described in pounds of “pull,” triggers set too heavily prove difficult to shoot accurately by requiring the shooter to exert excessive force when firing the gun -- causing the sights to move off-target. Triggers having too light a pull pose safety concerns, often causing the weapon to fire prematurely.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the muzzleloader in a gun vise. Remove the trigger assembly from the muzzleloader with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Locate the trigger adjustment screw, positioned perpendicularly to the trigger at the back of the trigger assembly. Not all CVA models have adjustable triggers; nonadjustable triggers will not have an adjustment screw. Turn the adjustment screw to the left to lighten trigger pull.

    • 3

Place the hook of a trigger tension scale over the trigger. Hold the trigger assembly in one hand while pulling back on the handle of the scale with the other hand. Watch the reading on the scale dial as the trigger breaks to determine the trigger’s set weight. Continue to back the trigger adjustment screw out gradually, retesting the pull with the scale, until the trigger reaches the desired amount of pull.
