Specs on Araya Rims

Araya, one of the top manufacturers of bicycle rims in Japan, offered rims on original equipment in the United States prior to 1987. After 1987, the value of the U.S. dollar dropped, and rising import costs caused the rims to be offered only as aftermarket replacement parts. Five main designs are produced by the company.
  1. Araya RM-17

    • The RM-17 includes a box-shape extrusion made of double-walled aluminum alloy and concave sidewalls. It is offered in a 26-inch diameter with a choice of 32- or 36-hole spokes with drilling to accommodate a Schrader valve stem. It is available in both clear-anodized silver and hard-anodized gray.

    Araya RM-20

    • The RM-20 is a double-walled rim made of aluminum alloy used for mountain bikes. Unlike the concave shape of other rims, it is designed with a flat sidewall. It is offered in 24- and 26-inch diameters with a choice of 32- or 36-hole spokes with drilling to accommodate a Schrader valve stem. Each rim is available in clear-anodized silver and hard-anodized gray.

    Araya CTL-385

    • Introduced in 1992, it is available in both 700c and 26-inch diameters, although the 700c version is only offered in the U.S. It uses a box-shape extrusion with double-walled aluminum alloy. It is offered with a choice of 32- and 36-hole spokes with drilling to accommodate a Presta valve stem and in silver or hard-anodized gray.

    Araya 395 Team

    • Introduced in 1993, the 395 Team is a 26-inch mountain bike rim. It includes double-walled, 7000-series aluminum alloy with a box-shape extrusion with concave sides. It is offered in only clear-anodized silver with a choice of 28-, 32- and 36-hole spokes with drilling for a Presta valve stem.

    Araya RM-400 Pro

    • The RM-400, introduced in 1990, uses double-walled 7000-series aluminum in a box-shape design with slightly concave sidewalls. Available only in clear-anodized silver, it is offered in a choice of 32- and 36-hole spokes with drilling for a Presta valve stem.
