How to Adjust a Go Kart's Max Torque

Go-karts are four-wheel recreational vehicles that are gas or battery powered, depending on the manufacturer. These vehicles are typically driven on closed tracks for racing events or for recreation. Go-karts generally don't have much power and have a low torque ratio. A torque converter can be installed on a go-kart to maximize engine rotation, which equates to more speed and performance on the track.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the go-kart up and set the vehicle on jack stands. This allows you to work underneath the vehicle.

    • 2

Remove the bolts holding the drive shaft to the transmission. Disconnect the drive shaft from the transmission housing and support the transmission using another jack stand. All go-karts vary in design, depending on the manufacturer. Consult your owners manual for specifics on the drive shaft and transmission disassembly.

    • 3

Slide the torque converter directly onto the engine crankshaft. The converter has a plate and slot that fits into the crankshaft. Secure the converter with the provided bolts.

    • 4

Install the new max-torque belt that is included in the torque converter kit. Hold the drive end down and slip the belt onto the unit. Attach the opposite side and slide it into place. Push the cam completely on the shaft post. Secure the cam with the provided snap rings.

Reattach the drive shaft to the transmission. Take the vehicle off of the jack stands. Start up the go-kart to ensure no fluids are leaking. Rev up the engine and test drive the vehicle. You will notice the sound of higher RPMs and increased speed.
