South Florida Bicycle Activities

Because of the warm year-round climate, the flat road surfaces and the many biking trails, south Florida is a great place for biking of all types. With both urban and rural areas, views of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico along the coasts, and numerous biking clubs and groups, South Florida offers a variety of biking activities and experiences.
  1. Sanibel Island Cruise

    • According to Trails.com, Sanibel Island is a great place to ride a bicycle. A complete ride around the island is a loop of approximately 35 miles on mostly flat roads. Because of the local climate, this ride can be taken year-round, and the roads of the island offer views of the Gulf of Mexico, Pine Island Sound and San Carlos Bay. Periwinkle Way, one of the roads traveled on this path, is quite narrow but traffic is limited and the speed limit is 35 miles per hour.

    Hallandale Sunday Morning Ride

    • The South Florida Bike Club meets every Sunday morning for the Hallandale ride. The group of bikers meets at the local Starbucks at 8:30 a.m. and rides over the Hallandale Beach Boulevard bridge. From there they travel in two groups going anywhere from 12 to 20 miles per hour. The entire ride takes about an hour and a half and is a loop down the beach-side road, A1A, over Dania Beach bridge and back to the starting location. The ride offers a good workout, friendly people and usually a breakfast meet up afterward, according to the club's MeetUp.com page.

    South Florida Bike Expo

    • Each year Bike America presents the South Florida Bike Expo. The expo is a great activity for bikers and cyclers of all types and ages, as there are activities and information for road biking, cycling, mountain biking, BMX riding and young riders. The goal of the expo is to "introduce and educate the South Florida community to the world of cycling and get you riding, and riding safely." Many local biking groups, retailers and safety experts, including Florida Bicycle Association, Open Streets Project, Miami South BMX and the South Florida Bike Coalition, are on site to provide the latest in biking gear, safety and riding information.
