1
Know your shoe size. Most fins come in small, medium and large sizes, and manufacturers note the corresponding shoe size. If you are between sizes Neoprene socks or booties can help to customize your fit.

2
Assess your level of snorkeling expertise. Beginning snorkelers may want to go with fins that offer a smaller surface area. While these fins offer less propulsion power, they are lighter and easier to maneuver. Snorkelers with a greater level of expertise may want to consider a larger fin area. These fins offer more power and quicker movements under the water.

Select a style of fin. Fins come in full-foot and open-heel styles. The full-foot style covers the diver's whole foot and offers heel protection, but they are not adjustable. The open-heel style comes with an adjustable heel strap. This allows you to try out different adjustments to achieve the correct size for your foot.

Decide if you want to use booties (also known as dive boots). Neoprene booties are popular with scuba divers and can enhance the comfort of snorkelers as well. Booties slip over your feet and add a layer between your skin and the fins. This helps prevent blisters and enhances your comfort level. Keep in mind, wearing booties will increase the foot size needed for your fins. Divers generally wear booties with open-heel fins. Booties can help customize the fit of fins that are a little too large for your feet.

Try on several different brands of fins and decide which feels the most comfortable on your feet. There may be a big discrepancy in fit across manufacturers. The fin should fit snugly on your foot but should not be uncomfortable or cut off your circulation.
