How to Drive in Disc Golf

For some fun and exercise in the outdoors, try the sport of disc golf. One of the most challenging aspects of disc golf is getting a good long drive. Getting the drive down is essential to playing a good game of disc golf. Strength is not the most important factor in a successful drive--technique is. Use the tips below for driving in disc golf.

      Know the distance of the hole. This is usually posted on a sign next to the tee along with the par of the hole. Knowing the distance helps you know where to aim and how far to throw, although beginners usually just needs to throw as far as they can.

      Begin at the back of the tee box. Take several steps to get the momentum needed for a good tee off. It is important to avoid running though. Two to three steps is enough. You can usually do a cross over with your feet, and the final step is taken with the same foot that you are throwing with, such as the right foot for right-handers.

      Throw with a backhand. There are other ways to throw a disc, but back gives you the most momentum in a drive. For a right-handed person, the motion of the disc begins at the left shoulder. Bring the arm around front of the body, and release the disc when it is straight out in front of the right shoulder.

      Keep the disc low. While the rotation begins at the left shoulder, as the arm moves around to the front, ii should be lowered. When the disc is released at the right side if the body, it should be closer to hip level. This is because the disc has a tendency to move high, which causes wind interference.

      Grip the outer ring of the disc firmly in your fingers. Do not grab onto a large part of the disc as you do with a regular Frisbee. This allows for the most rotation in the disc.

      Flick your wrist as you release the disc. Once again, this rotation makes your disc fly farther and stay lower towards the ground.
