Making Your Own Ribbed Golf Grip

There are two types of grips in golf -- round and ribbed. Round grips are exactly that; smooth, round rubber that wraps evenly around the butt of the shaft. Ribbed grips, however, have a built-in ridge in the rubber itself, that, if positioned correctly, lines the back of the grip, allowing your hands to make the proper formation around the club. They are perfectly legal, and many players prefer them to round grips. While there are no specific inserts for making a round grip into a ribbed grip, there is a way to, in a pinch, convert a round grip to ribbed grip with some simple household items.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay each zip-tie flat and cut off the locking mechanism on the one end and the tapered edge at the other. The end result should be a perfectly flat and evenly thick body of a zip-tie.

    • 2

Lay the zip-tie against the back of your grips, usually two will be required for a full grip.

    • 3

Wind grip tape around the grip of your club at the top, bottom and middle of each zip-tie, locking them firmly in place. Grip tape is ideal so the tackiness of your grips is not comprised.

    • 4

Grip the club with your hands and make sure the zip-ties are in a straight line running down the back side of the grip. If they are not perfectly straight, you may want to start over.
