How to Remove Two Sided Grip Tape From a Shaft

To put a new grip on a golf club, the old one must be removed first. Once the existing grip has been cut and pulled away, there should be a tightly-wrapped length of double-sided tape remaining on the shaft that must also be removed in order to continue the process of regripping. It is a relatively easy procedure but, if rushed, can damage the shaft, so be patient. Most club fitters and golf outlet stores sell the specific solvent used in the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the shaft over a sheet or newspaper to soak up the solvent after it has been poured. A paint tray to catch the solvent can also be used.

    • 2

Pour solvent over the existing double-sided tape wrapped around the butt of the shaft. Be sure to saturate every inch of the tape -- this will weaken the adhesive quality of the tape and allow you to pull it off quite easily. Never use a knife to cut the tape away, especially with graphite shafts, as it can leave small incisions and weaken the shaft's durability.

    • 3

Pull away the tape and pour a small amount of solvent into one of your washcloths. If some portions of the tape won't pull away easily, continue to saturate with solvent until it does. Do not use a knife or an abrasive like sandpaper.

    • 4

Wipe away any remaining residue with the washcloth containing solvent.

    • 5

Pour water into the other washcloth and use it to wipe away the remaining solvent.
