How to Heat Mold Graf 301 Skates

The truest way to break in any pair of skates is to simply skate in them. The more use the skates get, the more flexible they become. You can speed up the process by heat molding the skates in the oven. Manufacturers now recommend this process, which greatly assists in form fitting the skates to your feet. Graf makes its 301 skates with heat-resistant Thermolan, an insulating fleece, which allows for skate baking. The result is a more comfortable snug fit sooner than you would achieve with the more conventional methods of body heat, wear and time.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove laces and sole inserts prior to baking.

    • 2

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees. Once the oven reaches this temperature, turn it off; you are heating the boots, not cooking them.

    • 3

Place the Graf 301 skates on their sides on a baking sheet. To allow the heat access to the inside of the boot, pull and fold the tongue of the skate outward. The skates should remain in the oven for eight minutes.

    • 4

Remove the skates from the oven. Avoid touching the blades and metal lace eyelets, as both will be very hot. Feel the inside of the boot. The soles and sides should feel warm and flexible. If not, place the boots back in the oven for a few more minutes. You want these surfaces to be pliable and soft in preparation for form fitting them to your feet.

Replace the laces and sole inserts in the boots. Put your skates on and lace up tightly. Sit with your legs in front of you and the blades on the floor for about 15 or 20 minutes. Do not walk around. The skates should then be cool enough for you to remove them.
