How to Make a Lacrosse Pocket Stick for a Good Defense

The stick is the most important piece of equipment in lacrosse. Defensive players use sticks that are long and heavy for long passes of the ball, while offensive players use shorter and lighter sticks for quicker passes. The depth of the pocket also differs among positions. The defender’s pocket is shallow for more power, while an offensive player’s pocket is deeper for more control.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the mesh pocket to the top of the head using one of the nylon strings. Fold the mesh over the outside edge of the head and stitch the nylon string in and out of the holes to tighten the mesh. Tie off this string.

    • 2

Stitch the mesh pocket to each side of the head using a separate nylon string on each side. Tie off these strings.

    • 3

Weave the shooting string tightly into the mesh at the top of the head under the plastic frame. Tie off this string.

    • 4

Put a lacrosse ball in the mesh and try to form a pocket for the ball. New mesh will be rigid, so you may want to soften the mesh to make it suppler.

    • 5

Place the head in a bucket of warm water with a small amount of fabric softener. Massage the mesh and then let the head sit in the water for an hour.

    • 6

Work your fist into the wet mesh to create a pocket where the ball will rest. Place a lacrosse ball in the pocket. Leave the ball in the pocket overnight so that the mesh forms around the ball.

    • 7

Drill a one-quarter-inch hole through the top of the shaft. Place the head on the shaft and secure it with a screw, washer and nut.
