1982 Catalina 30 Specs

The Catalina 30 is a yacht manufactured by the Catalina Yacht company out of California. Though the yacht was introduced in 1974 to the market, its design remained virtually unchanged for the next 30 years. Therefore, the 1982 Catalina 30 shares its specifications with other boats in this 30-year span.
  1. Dimensions

    • The dimensions of the 1982 Catalina 30 are the same as in its introductory year of 1974. It has a Length Over All (LOA) beam of 29 feet, 11 inches and a 10-inch displacement, or 10,200 lbs. The draft on this boat is 5 feet, 3 inches. The draft refers to the length that the keel, which on the Catalina 30 is a fixed keel, hangs down from the bottom of the boat.

    Construction Techniques

    • These boats were made from several fiberglass types, primarily fiberglass cloth and plastic resin, used as principal materials for the construction of the hull. The materials for the deck consist of balsa wood or plywood strategically placed between different types of fiberglass laminates. The hull and the deck are joined, and the deck fits over the hull in a shoebox fashion, with sealant placed in between for waterproofing purposes.

    Common Problems

    • There have been several problems that have been consistently documented over the long history of the Catalina 30. Some of these include deck cores that deteriorate over time as well as compression fatigue that occurs in the mast step area. In addition, failed wooden spreaders and lower chain plate attachments have been problems that have plagued the Catalina 30.

    Power Specifications

    • The power motor on the 1982 Catalina 30 is an Atomic 4 gasoline engine. There was also another option that came with the boat, an 11-horsepower universal diesel engine. A complaint heard about the 11-horsepower motor is that it is only effective in the calmest of waters and does not perform well in choppy or strong waves. This engine is located beneath the dinette seat which can create excessive noise in the cabin.
