How to Wrap Polos

Polo may be the earliest sport recorded in the history of humanity. Polo dates back over 2,000 years ago, originating in Tibet and Persia. The name of the game comes from the Tibetan word "pholo" which refers to a ball. Players conduct themselves on horseback, gaining points against the opposite team. Polo wraps are supportive leg warmers for the horses lower legs. These wraps support the tendons of the horses legs, and are both protective and decorative. Wrapping your horses legs perfectly every time ensures its legs will be well shielded and look striking.

Position the wrap edge on the inside of the horses leg in the middle of the cannon bone or lower leg portion. Wind the wrap in a clockwise for the right leg and counter clockwise for the left. Head downwards, overlapping the wrap 1/3 to 1/2 of its own width each time. Pressure should be snug but not tight.

Wrap a single time around the horse's fetlock joint or ankle bone and hook the wrap around the ergot or bony growth that juts out of the back of the horse's leg.

    • 3

Wind the wrap back up the horse's leg, overlapping the wrap 1/3 to 1/2 of it's own width as you go. Spiral the wrap to the the top of your horse's cannon bone, just below where his leg begins to widen at his knee in his front legs or just before the hock if you're wrapping its back legs.

Tape the wrap in place with a piece of industrial strength tape. The hook and loop self fasteners that most wraps have are not the most reliable.
