Homemade Ski Wax

Cross-country skiing is a wonderful outdoor sport that offers participants a chance to get a little exercise, learn balance and experience the outdoors. The equipment needed for this sport, however, is costly and even supplies like ski wax can be a bit much if you participate a lot. Making your own can help keep costs down so that you can spend more time on the snow.

Instructions

    • 1

Start up a double boiler in a well-ventilated location. Water is added to the bottom of the boiler and the top portion is where you heat up the ingredients.

    • 2

Add pine tar to the boiler and stir with a spoon until it becomes thin.

    • 3

Add shellac flakes to the pine tar and stir. Add flakes until it resembles threads as you pull the spoon out of the mix. At this point you have a good wax that you can experiment with. For a wax that is more of a base wax, add a bit more shellac flakes. Base wax is applied before other waxes that are meant as performance aids. They help hold such waxes as grip wax to ski for longer periods of time. For something similar to Klister wax, add a touch more pine tar.
