Repair of a Delaminated Snowboard

Lamination covers the top of a snowboard. It is often decorated with graphics and words. After a high-impact accident or rough handling during transport, the lamination may peel away from the core of the snowboard. While the lamination serves no functional purpose, if the delamination isn't repaired, it will flop around and can peel off completely. However, if the delamination is dealt with early, it is a simple fix. The key is to use a flexible glue that gives when the board bends. A rigid glue cracks and breaks and the delamination reoccurs.

Instructions

Slide two shims under the lamination. Lift the lamination gently off the core of the snowboard, careful not to peel it farther back. Spread silicone on the core of the snowboard.

    • 2

Squeeze silicone evenly over the core of the snowboard under the lifted lamination. Be careful not to use too much initially. Spread it over the core evenly at a depth of 1/32 of an inch with the putty knife. Cover the entire exposed portion of the core. Add more silicone if necessary.

Leave the shims in place for five minutes to allow the silicon to tack. Pull the shims and wrap the freshly siliconed portion of the snowboard in kitchen towels. Put C-clamps around the edges of the board. Place cinder blocks on the top center of the portion you repaired. Allow the silicone to dry for 24 hours.
