How to Make a Mag Pouch for an Airsoft

Airsoft guns, which fire small soft pellets at a low velocity, are widely used by both serious shooters and those just looking for a fun time. Airsoft guns are often modeled after real firearms, and use similar attachments such as the magazine, which holds ammunition. As with a real firearm, when the pellets in the magazine are used up, a new full magazine replaces it. Carrying the new magazine in a belt pouch is the standard way to have an extra one available.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 pieces, 4-ounce cowhide leather, roughly 6 inches by 12 inches (depending on magazine size)
  • Marker pen
  • Utility knife or leather cutting scissors
  • Leather glue
  • Leather awl punch
  • Waxed nylon thread
  • Small piece of hardwood

Instructions

    • 1

Place one piece of the leather, rough side up, on the workbench.

    • 2

Lay the magazine down on the leather with the butt plate of the magazine facing toward the top. Trace the outline of the magazine around the leather, giving a one-inch margin on the sides and bottom. Provide a four-inch margin on the top above the butt plate.

    • 3

      Cut around the traced outline.

    • 4

Lay the second piece of leather down, rough side up and place the cut out outline on top of it, rough side to rough side.

    • 5

Trace the outline of the cut piece onto the second piece of leather, then cut that outline out.

    • 6

Place the first piece of leather down, rough side up and lay the magazine back onto it as it was initially, with the four-inch top margin above the butt plate.

    • 7

Spread a thin layer of leather glue onto the margins of the bottom leather, being sure not to get any around the magazine or above the height of the butt plate.

    • 8

Place the other leather piece on top of it, matching the first piece of leather.

    • 9

Press down on the top piece of leather, forming a snug fit for the magazine between the two layers of leather. Let the glue dry.

    • 10

Cut horizontally across the top piece of leather, just below the butt plate. Leave just enough room for your fingers to slide over the plate and pull the magazine out of the pouch. The cut piece of leather is the front of the pouch.

    • 11

Punch holes with the awl through both pieces of leather every quarter-inch, starting on one side of the magazine, continuing around the bottom and up the other side to provide holes for the waxed thread. The holes should start even where the two pieces of leather meet at the butt plate and create a fit that is snug enough to allow the magazine to slide in and out easily, but not to slip out unless pulled. It is critical that you use an uneven number of holes.

    • 12

Slide the wax thread into the holes, starting at the back end of the first hole and continuing by pulling it tightly through to the last hole on the other side. The thread should go into the last hole from the front and extend to the back. Tie the thread behind the leather so that it will not work loose.

    • 13

Test the fit by pulling the magazine in and out of the pouch.

    • 14

Trim off all excess leather past the thread on both sides and bottom.

    • 15

Fold the extra leather above the butt plate backward to form a belt loop on the pouch. Use the punch to create holes across the leather piece just above the butt plate and sew the piece to itself the same as you sewed the two pieces together.

    • 16

Rub the cut edges of the leather on a smooth piece of hardwood such as oak or hickory to buff and smooth them if you desire.
