How to Heat Mold Snowboard Boot Liners

Control is everything when snowboarding. Your feet must interact with your boots, which must interact with your board to navigate steep and dangerous slopes at high speeds. A critical link in the control chain is how your feet fit in your boots. The more sensitive your boots are to what your feet are telling the board to do, the more control you will have on the slopes. One way to improve your boots' sensitivity is to mold its liners to your feet using heat molding. Heat molding custom fits the liner to the specific contours of your feet by letting a heated-up liner mold to your foot shape.

Preheat a convection oven to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Wait until the oven reaches the appropriate temperature before putting the boots in. Do not use a microwave or a clothes dryer as this can damage the liner materials.

    • 2

Take the liners out of their boots and remove any toe caps that may be in the liner. Place one liner in the oven for about 5 minutes. Do not leave the liner unattended while it is in the oven.

Take the liner out after 5 minutes and quickly place it back in the boot with the toe cap.

Put on a pair of socks that you would use when snowboarding. Step into the boot and make sure the fit is firm and snug. Lace up your boot tight---as you would when you are snowboarding---and walk around for about 15 minutes to get the liner to adjust its shape to the contours of your feet.

Repeat this process with the other liner. Do not heat both at the same time as you will end up with an uneven mold. You can repeat the molding process as the liner loses its custom fit over time.
