Fundraising Ideas for Varsity Wrestling

Wrestling at a varsity level requires commitment, mental and physical strength on the part of the athlete. The sport also requires money for a team to train and compete. School budgets experience cut-backs that remove the funds needed to successfully run the wrestling program and fundraising becomes necessary to purchase the needed equipment and pay for uniforms and transportation. Always get the proper permission before taking on any fundraising task.
  1. Banners and Logos

    • Raise money for the varsity wrestling team by selling ads to local businesses. Offer to wear a company logo patch on uniforms for a given price. Several small logos can be sewn to the warm-up jackets for the wrestlers. Banners, held by team mates at functions waiting for their match, or hung in the arenas during events, can be created and filled with advertisements bought by local stores. A business might donate uniforms in exchange for their name being placed on the sleeve or pant leg. Sell advertising to be stenciled on the corners of the mat for home events.

    Wrestling Camp

    • Earn money for the varsity team by holding a weekend wrestling camp for younger athletes. Varsity members donate their time to teach younger wrestlers proper techniques for the sport. Share work-out tips and proper eating ideas. Divide the participants according to experience and age levels. With the proper permission, hold the camp in the school gym to avoid incurring facility costs. Advertise to all the middle and elementary schools in the district and surrounding areas if allowed. Be sure the event is properly supervised by trained professionals.

    Go Pro

    • Local professional wrestling associations hold benefit shows. Contact the closest wrestling school or association and request a show be held to benefit the varsity team. These shows typically split the ticket earnings between the association and the sponsor. Get permission to hold the show in the high school gym to avoid the costs of a venue; and advertise heavily around the community. Be very clear with the wrestling promoter on the ability to sell concessions including drinks, popcorn and candy during the event. Obtain a specific list of what the association will need including changing rooms, sound setup and entrance areas. Get the school theater group involved to help out with lighting and sound; and seek out volunteers to help set-up chairs, pre-sell tickets and make posters and fliers for advertising.

    Wrestling Fun Fair

    • Hold a fair for students and the community based on wrestling. Sumo suit wrestling, where participants dress up in over-sized sumo wrestler outfits, can be featured along with other sideshow-type attractions. Hold demonstrations of wrestling moves and set up a high school hall of fame featuring past varsity wrestlers from the school. Have basic fair games to fill in the time and space. Charge a low ticket price and sell concessions.
