How to Make Cheer Bows Using Material

Cheerleaders lead cheers and help pump up the crowd at team sporting events, but they are also athletes in their own right. Traditionally, cheerleaders dress in their school colors, with uniforms that facilitate movement and stunts. Game day outfits also include coordinating accessories, like face paint and hair bows. You can make your own customized cheer bows to wear or give as team gifts.

Things You'll Need

  • Ribbons in team colors
  • Masking tape
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Hot glue gun
  • Metal hair clips (french clips and two pronged alligator clips work well)
  • Charms, buttons and fabric paint (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the largest ribbon to twice the desired finished length, and lay flat on a table. Repeat with other layers, laying each on top of the previous ribbon. Determine the midpoint of the ribbons, and mark with a small piece of masking tape.

    • 2

Thread your needle, and knot the end of the thread. Pick up your ribbons, and fold them into a loop, ensuring that the ends are slightly overlapping. Push the needle through the overlapped ends, and up through the center of the loop, using the masking tape as a guide.

    • 3

Pull the thread taut to flatten out the loop, and wrap the thread around it several times, pulling it tight to form the sides of the bow. When the middle feels secure, knot the thread and cut off the excess. Add a dab of hot glue on the bottom of the bow for extra security.

    • 4

Cover the exposed thread by gluing a small piece of ribbon, button or charm over the center of the bow. Use the fabric paint to write your name or the team's name on your bow, if desired. Glue the finished bow to the hair clip of your choice, and let cool before wearing.
