Jeep Trails in Western Massachusetts

Western Massachusetts has many well-maintained off-road trails for recreational driving and biking. ATVs, four-wheelers and off-road jeeps will find miles of rowdy, technical driving in the four State Forests in Western Massachusetts. Each forest has trails that accommodate off-road vehicles for riders of intermediate and advanced skill. Maps and trail conditions can be found at forest offices and online.
  1. Pittsfield State Forest

    • Pittsfield State Forest features 25 miles of trail for off-road vehicles, including motorcycles and other all-terrain vehicles. In 2010, 10 miles of trail were closed to riders for conservation purposes. Check with the park to see if these trails have reopened prior to your visit.

You need a permit to ride for the day here. Permits can be reserved in advance and are free of charge, although visitors would be wise to make reservations as early as possible.

    Beartown State Forest

    • Beartown State Forest has more than 20 miles of trails that can accommodate most off-road vehicles, including jeeps and motorcycles. The trails in Beartown are old logging roads, with many sharp turns, steep drops and climbs, and many roots and rocks on the trail. A favorite among Western Massachusetts riders, the trails at Beartown can be muddy, so consider the recent weather and check conditions before you head out.
