How to Adjust Tension on a Treadmill

The tension on a treadmill belt is an important maintenance issue. A slack belt can cause unnecessary wear to the belt and/or deck. It can also lead to costly repairs in the future. A loose belt can also cause serious injury.

Instructions

  1. Adjust the Treadmill Belt

    • 1

Make sure the treadmill is turned off.

    • 2

Locate the jackscrews that attach the rear roller to the back of the treadmill. The belt will be wrapped around the roller at the back of the treadmill.

    • 3

Use a hex wrench or screwdriver to evenly tighten the jackscrews on both sides of the roller until the belt is taut.

    Center the Belt

    • 4

      Turn the treadmill on.

    • 5

Set the speed to 0.5 miles per hour.

    • 6

Turn the left jackscrew a quarter turn left or right to move the belt toward the center. The belt will slowly creep back to center. It may take several tries to successfully center the belt.

    • 7

Once centered, slowly turn the jackscrew in the opposite direction until the belt stops creeping in either direction. This will balance the roller and keep the belt from creeping off center again.
