How to Pack an A.L.I.C.E. Ruck

The United States military designed and issued ALICE packs are modular pack devices. ALICE is the acronym name for the All-Purpose LIghtweight Individual Carrying Equipment. As the ALICE packs are modular, the rucksack portion goes onto the system over the lower back of the ALICE straps. Once the rucksack is in place, pack it to take advantage of the weight distributing system. As a general rule, keep heavy items low and weight distributed symmetrically in the rucksack.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose either the large or medium-size rucksack, based on the amount of gear needed for your trip. Large packs are suitable for multi-day trips, while the medium are best-suited for weekend excursions.

    • 2

Clip the rucksack to the shoulder straps and frame on the back of the ALICE system. Use the metal clips to attach the rucksack corners to the corners of the frame.

    • 3

Place heavy items into the center bottom of the rucksack. The purpose is to keep as much weight over the hips versus the back, as this is more efficient and easier on the body.

    • 4

Pack small items around the heavy. If you place a 5-lb. object next to the heavy item, place a similar weighted item on the opposite side. Pack the rucksack evenly, going symmetrical on a horizontal level.

    • 5

Pack soft goods such as clothing, sleeping bags or bandanas over heavy items and toward the top of the pack; the purpose again being to keep weight centered more toward the hips and waist instead of the back. Cinch the top pull, flip the upper pack lid over the main and clip it to the packs front straps to keep it secured and closed.
