How to Install Sling Swivels

Rifle slings are a useful tool for creating a steady shooting position when you don't have a rest to use, like a tree-limb or bench. Accuracy can be obtained by wedging an arm into the sling, or grasping the slack in the sling and using it to hold the stock against your shoulder. Slings can also be used to carry the rifle by slinging it over your shoulder. Many long guns like the AR-15 or M-16 come equipped with a front pivot pin and rear sling loop. You can remove them and add a sling swivel.

Instructions

Remove the front pin on the rifle, then remove the retainer detent and spring.

    • 2

Install the new pin from the left side of the receiver and insert the screw on the right side. Turn the pin by hand until it's tight, but not too tight. Discard the old retainer detent and spring.

Remove the bottom butt plate screw with a screwdriver, then remove the rear sling loop. Install the new rear swivel pin and the original bottom butt plate screw. Add the swivels by unscrewing the thumb screws, then removing the fastener. Slide the swivels onto the pins and re-attach the fasteners with the thumb screws. The swivels should move freely when fastened.
