How to Perfect a Traditional Grip

Golf is a difficult and humbling sport. There is no team to support a golfer, and all of the elements of nature come into play. When it comes to the basics, nothing beats practice. And when it comes to practice, there is no better place to start than your grip. It is a place that can make or break a good swing. A steady grip leads to a steady swing, and it takes consistency to keep the ball flying far, straight and in the intended direction.

Instructions

    • 1

Grip your golf club with your left hand, resting it diagonally with the medial heel of your hand at the butt-end of the club's grip. Close your left hand, leaving as little of the grip exposed under your left hand as possible.

    • 2

Place your right hand alongside the left hand, which should still be resting on the grip of your golf club.

    • 3

Close your right hand onto the grip and fit the thumb of your left hand into the mid-line, or groove, of the right palm.

    • 4

Rest the right pinkie finger in one of two locations, depending on feel: diagonally across the left index finger or in the groove between the index finger and middle finger of the left hand.

    • 5

Hit the driving range and try your new grip. Make sure to hit shots with every club.
